When the curtain rises on “Annie” in the fall — at a yet-to-be-named Nederlander theater on Broadway — the young actress playing the coveted role of Molly, the little orphan who Annie takes a shine to — will be Scarsdale’s Emily Rosenfeld. Emily, who is 8, is a veteran of Random Farms Kids’ Theater — where she played Gretl in “The Sound of Music,” Dickon Sowerby in “The Secret Garden,” and, in what must have been a bit of trick casting, Big Jule in “Guys and Dolls.” “That was a lot of fun because they…

It seems we’ve been doing a lot of these obituary posts lately. But the truth is we’ve lost some great music legends recently, from Davy Jones and Earl Scruggs, to Ronnie Montrose and Dick Clark. Now comes word that Levon Helm died at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center after a long bout with the disease. [...] Click the headline to the full post ...

For 12 weeks, we feature a wine, and include tasting notes and suggestions for pairings. At the end of the 12 weeks, we’ll review our Mixed Case, and recap the choices. Each mixed case will be chosen by a local wine shop owner, who will also become our wine expert-in-residence during his or her tenure. (So should we need recommendations for a holiday, for example. we’ll ask.) We’ll get a new expert for each case. Right now, we’re working on our Mixed Case from Aries Wine & Spirits in White Plains. Chateau Bouchaine Carneros Pinot Noir 2008 is bottle 7 in our…

  • Westchester Sandbox teams with Emelin

One of the happiest local-theater developments in recent years has been the breathtaking rise of the Westchester Sandbox Theatre in Mamaroneck, which this spring hosted the New York regional premiere of Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey’s “Next to Normal.” Next week, the tiny storefront theater will host another New York regional premiere of a cutting-edge (and edgy) musical, “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson.” It’s not a WST production; it comes from Little Radical Theatrics, the group that scratches the theatrical niche of kids in college and just beyond.
  • Strange Bedfellows stage a groovy “Midsummer”

Had a nice visit at Children’s Shakespeare Theatre earlier in the week, watching the unsinkable Diana Green putting her cast through its paces. The actors were not children, but adults, members of The Strange Bedfellows, a group that formed a few years ago from the ranks of parents who had kids in the program and were bitten (or re-bitten) by the acting bug. As I sat watching Chris Carroll as Puck (part bad-ass, part “The Dude” from “The Big Lebowski” above, at right, with Andrew Greenway as Oberon) being surrounded by a half-dozen slinky ladies dressed as…

Dick Clark once told me that one of his fondest musical memories growing up was listening to the jukebox at “Itchum’s,” a corner hangout in his hometown of Mount Vernon, where kids – including a young Clark – would flock after school to hear the latest tunes. That was 1992, when I spoke to Clark [...] Click the headline to the full post ...

It’s not as if “Oh Pretty Woman” needed to be covered. I mean, the song had some legs on its own after the late, great Roy Orbison released it in 1964 – a tune he co-wrote. But give pop rockers Van Halen credit for not only doing it justice, but turning it into a hit [...] Click the headline to the full post ...

Another big loss for the music world: Jim Marshall, amp-man extraordinaire,  died today. He was 88. Marshall’s name is, literally, on the sound of innumerable rock legends, his cursive signature looping across the faces of amplifiers stacked behind Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Slash and lots and lots of others. The Listening Room is generally a positive place. When there’s so much amazing music out there to write about, we figure, why waste ink (or pixels, I suppose) picking apart a dippy ditty? Commentary on today’s news and opinion, from readers and newsmakers. A Rockland County Girl Scout is in Albany today to urge lawmakers to raise the state’s minimum wage. Hannah Buckler, 12, of New City, decided while volunteering at a local soup kitchen that raising the wage would help the poor. What LoHud.com readers said: Raising the minimum wage? Good opportunity to teach the child that minimum wage is not something to strive for. Increasing minimum wage will make New York state that much more unattractive to future potential employers, making it less likely her father will get…

The Journal News found in state inspection reports that the Lower Hudson Valley is home to 18 bridges, which are in serious need of repair or replacement. Commentary on today’s news and opinion, from readers and newsmakers. Rockland County’s image took a hit Thursday when Moody’s Investors Service lowered its credit rating because it’s short $40 million. What LoHud.com readers had to say: News of Moody’s lowering Rockland’s credit rating confirms what virtually every Rockland County resident has known for many years: Rockland is poorly run; there is a duplication of services (how many separate police forces, highway and other departments etc. do we have for 300,000 residents?); county government is bloated…

How LoHud.com readers responded: ‘The Town Board has guaranteed many (RLDC) loans and it is my responsibility to make sure that the money is in place,’ to repay them, [Withers] said.” Um … wouldn’t the time to do that have been BEFORE you voted to guarantee the loans? Hale Males Ride Rail Trail For Pale Ale I’m waiting for three men. • Latin Twist: Chimichurri (a.k.a. Argentine Pesto)

Like many of its condiment cousins, this one — chimichurri — is versatile! Not unlike pesto, this basil and herb-based sauce can be a marinade, dipping sauce, and more. I first tried chimichurri years ago, on my first visit to  Buenos Aires, Argentina. Luckily my friend Maria Rosa (who, in addition to being an educator, tango dancer and amazing sculptor, also cooks!) shared the ingredients she usually uses. After my next visit (and my tango lessons!) I started taking more notes, and playing around with ingredients. The result was this version, though I may vary it depending on…

Spring has sprung! I want to share one of my favorite recipes featuring two spring vegetable superstars:  asparagus and leeks. Both vegetables are versatile, so I decided to take it a step further and develop one recipe that can be prepared two ways! Gingered Asparagus & Leeks, Roasted or Grilled Serves 4 Ingredients 1 bunch of asparagus (about 16 spears) 1 leek, thinly sliced Juice of half a lemon 1 tablespoon olive oil (optional) 1 tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce (for a wheat-free alternative, try tamari sauce) 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated Instructions Snap the wood ends off the…
